Like a mountaineer who initially follows the guide’s trail without asking why the path is that way taqlid faith is a valid first step yet needs to be perfected. When one finally studies the shape of the slopes, wind directions, and the basis of each route, that is when we enter faith with knowledge, called ilmul yaqin. Both steps are our responsibility as travelers on the spiritual path, while the highest peaks can only be reached by the grace of the Mountain’s Sovereign.
The meaning is that it is acceptable if one does not know the religious evidence (dalil) and simply follows scholars. But if one is able to understand the key principles of Islamic jurisprudence and grammar (nahwu) from religious texts, it is better to pursue such learning. As for attaining the status of a supremely pious person (like a scholar), it is not an obligation—merely obeying God’s commands is sufficient
