FAKTA DUNIA PENDAKIAN

PENDAKIAN: ANTARA PIKIRAN DAN KENYATAAN
 
Seringkali sulit menjelaskan "kenapa suka naik gunung" ke orang yang belum pernah mencoba. Ada jurang pemisah antara apa yang dibayangkan di rumah dengan apa yang dirasakan di lapangan. Mari kita lihat perbandingan antara pikiran awam vs. fakta di lapangan:
 
1. Soal Beban Tas (Carrier)
- Pikiran Awam: "Bawa tas sebesar itu pasti menyiksa bahu sampai mau copot."
- Faktanya: Jika packing-nya benar dan set-up tasnya pas, beban itu 80% bertumpu di pinggul, bukan bahu. Tas modern didesain mengikuti anatomi tulang belakang, sehingga kamu bisa berjalan berjam-jam tanpa merasa tertekan.
2. Soal Rasa Dingin
- Pikiran Awam: "Di gunung itu kedinginan terus sepanjang waktu, kayak di dalam kulkas."
- Faktanya: Saat mendaki (bergerak), tubuhmu justru akan kepanasan. Pendaki seringkali hanya memakai kaos karena tubuh memproduksi panas internal. Dingin baru terasa saat berhenti lama atau saat tidur—itupun bisa diatasi dengan layering pakaian.
3. Soal Bahaya Binatang Buas
- Pikiran Awam: "Hati-hati nanti diterkam harimau atau digigit ular di hutan."
- Faktanya: Binatang liar sebenarnya jauh lebih takut pada manusia. Suara langkah kaki, percakapan, dan bau manusia biasanya membuat mereka menjauh. "Musuh" terbesarmu sebenarnya adalah lintah atau nyamuk, bukan harimau.
4. Soal "Gak Mandi"
- Pikiran Awam: "Gak mandi 3 hari pasti bau busuk, lengket, dan gatal-gatal."
- Faktanya: Karena minim polusi dan udara kering, keringat tidak bercampur bakteri jahat sebanyak di kota. Kamu akan merasa "bersih-bersih saja". Bahkan, setelah 3 hari tidak mandi, rambutmu mungkin tidak selepek saat kamu tidak keramas sehari di Jakarta.
5. Soal Kesepian di Hutan
- Pikiran Awam: "Pasti sepi, horor, dan mencekam karena cuma ada pohon."
- Faktanya: Gunung (terutama jalur resmi) seringkali ramai. Kamu akan menemukan "pasar" di puncak atau area perkemahan. Suasananya justru sangat sosial, penuh tawa, dan musik dari tenda tetangga. Jauh dari kesan sunyi yang menyeramkan.
6. Soal Buang Air Besar (BAB)
- Pikiran Awam: "Gimana caranya? Pasti kotor, jorok, dan nggak higienis."
- Faktanya: Melakukan "ritual" di alam terbuka dengan pemandangan lembah atau pepohonan justru memberikan sensasi kebebasan yang tidak ada di toilet hotel bintang lima. Asal tahu tekniknya, ini jauh lebih bersih daripada toilet umum yang tidak terawat.
7. Soal Kelelahan
- Pikiran Awam: "Naik gunung itu cuma capek-capekin badan, mending rebahan."
- Faktanya: Ada jenis hormon endorfin dan dopamin yang keluar saat kamu lelah di alam. Capeknya gunung itu "bersih"—setelah turun, badan mungkin pegal, tapi mentalmu terasa seperti baru saja di-restart total.
8. Soal Makan
- Pikiran Awam: "Makanannya pasti seadanya, cuma roti atau mi instan."
- Faktanya: Gunung adalah tempat "adu gengsi" memasak. Sering ditemukan pendaki membawa kompor canggih untuk bikin kopi manual brew, masak nasi goreng lengkap dengan telur, bahkan sup ayam hangat di tengah kabut. Makan di gunung rasanya 10x lebih enak karena faktor lingkungan.
9. Soal Trek atau Jalanan
- Pikiran Awam: "Jalannya pasti nanjak terus tanpa henti kayak tangga."
- Faktanya: Jalur pendakian itu bervariasi. Ada bagian "bonus" (jalan datar), ada turunan, dan ada jeda di mana kamu bisa duduk di akar pohon sambil ngemil cokelat. Pendakian adalah soal ritme, bukan balapan.
10. Soal Biaya
- Pikiran Awam: "Hobi orang kaya karena alatnya mahal-mahal."
- Faktanya: Sekarang banyak tempat penyewaan alat (rental). Kamu bisa naik gunung dengan perlengkapan standar tanpa harus beli. Modal utamanya sebenarnya bukan uang, tapi kemauan dan waktu luang

CLIMBING: BETWEEN MIND AND REALITY
 
It's often difficult to explain "why I like mountain climbing" to someone who has never tried it. There's a divide between what's imagined at home and what's felt in the field. Let's take a look at the comparison between common thoughts vs. facts in the field:
 
1. Regarding Bag Load (Carrier)
- Common Thought: "Carrying such a big bag must torture the shoulders until they're about to fall off."
- Fact: If the packing is correct and the bag set-up is right, the load rests 80% on the hips, not the shoulders. Modern bags are designed to follow the anatomy of the spine, so you can walk for hours without feeling pressured.
2. Regarding Cold Sensation
- Common Thought: "It's freezing all the time in the mountains, like in a refrigerator."
- Fact: When climbing (moving), your body will actually get hot. Climbers often only wear t-shirts because the body produces internal heat. The cold is only felt when you stop for a long time or when you sleep—even then it can be overcome with layering clothes.
3. Regarding the Danger of Wild Animals
- Common Thought: "Be careful you don't get mauled by a tiger or bitten by a snake in the forest."
- Fact: Wild animals are actually much more afraid of humans. The sound of footsteps, conversation, and human smells usually make them go away. Your biggest "enemies" are actually leeches or mosquitoes, not tigers.
4. Regarding "No Showering"
- Common Thought: "Not showering for 3 days must smell bad, be sticky, and itchy."
- Fact: Because of minimal pollution and dry air, sweat doesn't mix with as many bad bacteria as in the city. You'll feel "pretty clean". In fact, after 3 days without showering, your hair may not be as limp as when you don't wash it for a day in Jakarta.
5. Regarding Loneliness in the Forest
- Common Thought: "It must be quiet, horrific and scary because there are only trees."
- Fact: Mountains (especially official routes) are often crowded. You'll find a "market" at the summit or camping area. The atmosphere is very social, full of laughter and music from neighboring tents. Far from the scary impression of silence.
6. Regarding Defecation (BAB)
- Common Thought: "How do you do it? It must be dirty, gross, and unhygienic."
- Fact: Performing the "ritual" in the open air with views of valleys or trees actually provides a sense of freedom that doesn't exist in a five-star hotel toilet. As long as you know the technique, it's much cleaner than a poorly maintained public toilet.
7. Regarding Fatigue
- Common Thought: "Climbing a mountain just makes your body tired, better to lie down."
- Fact: There are types of endorphin and dopamine hormones that are released when you are tired in nature. The tiredness of the mountain is "clean"—after going down, the body may be sore, but your mind feels like it has just been totally restarted.
8. Regarding Food
- Common Thought: "The food must be simple, just bread or instant noodles."
- Fact: The mountain is a place to "compete" in cooking. You can often find climbers bringing sophisticated stoves to make manual brew coffee, cook fried rice complete with eggs, or even warm chicken soup in the middle of the fog. Eating on the mountain feels 10x better because of environmental factors.
9. Regarding Tracks or Roads
- Common Thought: "The road must be uphill continuously like stairs."
- Fact: The climbing route varies. There are "bonus" sections (flat roads), there are descents, and there are breaks where you can sit on the roots of trees while snacking on chocolate. Climbing is about rhythm, not racing.
10. Regarding Costs
- Common Thought: "A rich man's hobby because the tools are expensive."
- Fact: Now there are many equipment rental places. You can climb a mountain with standard equipment without having to buy it. The main capital is actually not money, but willingness and free time
